Bratislava has one of the smallest but most beautiful old towns in central Europe, crowned by Bratislava castle, overlooking the Danube River and the maze of cobblestone streets and cafes below. Visit the old Jewish cemetery and the New Bridge, a modern crossing with a restaurant on top that divides the quaint medieval old town from the new town’s communist era residential blocks. Bratislava is so close to Vienna that it’s practically a suburb, but Bratislava is a lot cheaper than Vienna and the Slovaks enjoy their nightlife and café’s with, dear we say, more gusto. In the winter, do as the locals do and take a train ride to the popular Slovak ski resort of Jasna in the Low Tatras range, offering 1000 meter vertical drops and some of the cheapest and most lively apre ski scenes in central Europe.
On Continental and Czech Airlines from New York $896 total.
