The port town of Gdansk, historically also called Danzig in German, is Poland’s main port city and has one of the most beautifully rebuilt old towns in Eastern Europe. Most of Gdansk/Danzig was left in ruins by the end of world war II and was subsequently rebuilt using the original blueprints and most of the original bricks, making a walk through the Motława River bank, a walk back in time to the gilded age of the Hanseatic League. The first shots of World War II were fired in Gdansk, but also the first thawing of the cold war, with Lech Walesa’s Solidarity movement springing out of the frustration felt by Gdansk’s shipyard workers (the airport is named after Lech). Enjoy a river cruise along Gdansk’s historical wharfs and see the actual place where world war two started and where the Cold war started to end. Enjoy a cheap meal at a typical Polish Milk bar and don’t miss the amber museum with its elaborately carved Amber pieces as Gdansk is the self proclaimed Amber capital of the world. Enjoy this jewel of the Baltic with vayama’s cheap international airfares to the heart of Eastern Europe this winter.
