Germanwings is a budget carrier that was founded in 1997 as a division of a Lufthansa subsidiary. Operations began in the early 2000s, with short-haul flights within Europe and mostly between Germany and the most popular sun and beach destinations in the Mediterranean. Over the years, Germanwings entered into several codeshare agreements with other European, North American and Asian carriers. This led to the expansion of its flight network, which now includes approximately 150 destinations in Europe, South East Asia, the Caribbean, the United States and the Indian Ocean. After a merger that took place in 2015, Germanwings began to operate under the name of Eurowings.

Seat classes and fare types are as follows:

• Basic or budget fare: the cheapest of all three and ideal for those who travel light and do not need additional services like meals or extra luggage, as these are charged separately.
• Smart or standard fare: suitable for both business and leisure travelers, includes some add-on services like seat selection, lounge access and meals.
• Best or premium fare: offers spacious seating arrangements, priority check-in, a-la-carte meals, and a higher checked baggage allowance, among other benefits. In addition, business travelers, or those flying on a Smart or Best ticket, can enjoy more flexible terms and conditions by adding a Flex option, which is available at a surcharge.

Practical Information

The check-in process can be carried out online, using a mobile app or at the airport counter. However, travelers on a long-haul flight should ensure that online check-in is available for their specific itinerary. Baggage:

• Travelers flying on a Basic fare ticket are charged a fee to check their baggage. The specific amount depends on each route, but usually ranges between 9 and 30 Euros for each 23 kg (50 lb) bag. Smart and Best class ticket holders can check their luggage at no extra cost. Discounted baggage fees are available when paying for luggage online prior to departure.
• Passengers traveling on Basic and Smart fares can bring on board one piece of cabin luggage of no more than 8 kg (17 lb) along with a smaller item such as a handbag, a briefcase or a laptop bag as long as it does not exceed 40 x 10 x 30 cm (L x W x H). In Best Class, the cabin baggage allowance is increased to two bags plus a personal item.
