Founded in 1919, KLM is the oldest airline in the world still operating under its original name, which is short for Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij in Dutch or Royal Aviation Company in English. KLM is part of Air France and is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands with their hub located at Schiphol Airport. They also have the advantage of a second Air France hub at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris. Since 2004, they have been a member of the SkyTeam airline Alliance which has given them access to a close knit network, allowing them to fly to 600 destinations worldwide. The airline group also includes Cityhopper, transavia.com, and Martinair, whose services operate within Europe as part of the 'low cost, low fare' market. The airline currently operates flights between its hub at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport to 8 gateways in the US; New York (JFK), Newark, Houston Intercontinental, Washington Dulles, Chicago O'Hare, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.

Flying with KLM
Passenger comfort on KLM's flights are just as important as safety and security. There are 3 travel classes available:
- Economy Class - passengers have ergonomically designed seats, and extra legroom for a fee. On intercontinental flights passengers can select special meals for dietary or religious requirements and relax with a personal entertainment system.
- Europe Business Class - passengers have priority boarding, extra baggage allowance, high quality meals and double Flying Blue Miles.
- World Business Class - passengers also have sleeper seats with a massage function, as well as access to Crown lounges.
The Flying Blue program lets passengers to earn miles as they fly, there are 4 levels to the frequent flyer program. The miles can be redeemed against services and products with over 100 airline partners.
Practical Information
Passengers using the self check-in machines at the airport can do so up to 40 minutes before departure. Check-in can also be done online as early as 30 hours prior to departure or at the latest 1 hour before. Passengers can take 1 piece of hand luggage for free, but its size must not exceed 55 x 25 x 35 cm (LxWxH).
